I am a child therapist in Portland, Maine. First I want to thank you for the copy of your book for our waiting room. The book is excellent, speaks to all of my own concerns and is right on time before our culture goes under with this form of technology. Barbara, Family Therapist, Freeport Maine
Joanie's Bookpassage event was intimate and the audience was a most enthusiastic one. They all bought a book and talked with the author at length. We look forward to continuing to sell her book in the store. Bookpassage, Corte Madera, CA
I have a lot to learn, no doubt and your cyber.rules approach is fresh, provocative, forthright and very real. I like the way you speak and acknowledge that it's all about kids taking responsibility for making healthy choices. We need to be there with information so that we can be that authoritative parent (who helps translate back to kids the kinds of important questions they are already asking so that they find their own answers. Wow, you are one powerful and dynamic, fact-and-figures ready speaker. Nice going! We need to stop patting ourselves on the back and being oblivious to the revolution and change all around us. Maureen, parent of teenagers, Marin County, CA
The audience LOVED your presentation....,in fact at the Board meeting they commented that could have listened for hours. Monterey Country Chapter of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (MC-CAMFT).
Thank you again for your generous offer to speak to the senior class about your new book cyber.rules. Many of the students were still talking about the presentation several days later; always a positive sign that they found the presentation provocative. The topic of sexual images unquestionable elicited the most visceral reactions from the students immediately after the presentation. However, many of the follow-up questions in the advisor groups were related to the idea of identity; how people are increasingly merging or separating their real-world identity with their online identity. Students were also very interested in the physiological changes in the brain that have occurred as a result of technology. The students' parents were also very grateful for the time that they were able to spend with you after the presentation. They appreciated the work that you are doing on this important front. Well researched and informative, Cyber Rules acknowledges the magnitude of the Internet, its value and its menace. It is unique in that it discusses offline psychosocial behavior, applying normal adolescent and teen development to online psychology and behavior. The guidelines are practical and specific, stressing that individual differences in people preclude any "one rule fits all". It is educational and useful for clinicians, parents, and anyone interested in understanding the impact of the internet on society. Ann, RN Family Nurse Practitioner, San Francisco, CA
